Plant Club is an ongoing collaborative community-arts project between Radical Plant Folk, local artist-faclitator/plant-pigment maker, Ione Maria-Rojas and grower/herbalist Melissa Harvey.
Plant Club began in 2024 as a botanical drawing group. Since then it has transformed into loosely facilitated sessions where people from all backgrounds are welcome to come and create with the plants in the herb garden. In Plant Club the garden becomes an open-studio and creative collaborator. We provide artistic materials as well as prompts. But most importantly it is a self-directed space, where people are welcome to be creative with no pressure and be inspired by the plants, land and each other. Sessions have run on a donation-basis, and are open to all.
In the face of ecological and climate crises, we believe Plant Club is a quietly radical project with the potential to creatively disrupt capitalist values of productivity and urgency through engaging people in ‘the politics of slowing things down’ and listening to the land. Sessions are intentionally slow and relaxed, and offer a chance for people to come into connection with the more-than human world through creativity.
Since 2026 we have offered bespoke plant club sessions including for Platform Places (a nonprofit building movements of community owned neighbourhoods) and Totnes Pride. We have also run Plant Club indoors as part of a special Winter series focused on collage making.
