Drop-in gardening sessions

We also run occasional drop-in garden sessions on an ad-hoc basis for our regular volunteers.

ABOUT OUR community volunteer SESSIONS

Volunteer sessions are a space for us to come together, grow and harvest herbs and food, share and explore plant knowledge and make seasonal remedies, food and craft. It is a great opportunity to meet new people and learn new skills. We have witnessed previous volunteers continue on to study horticulture and herbal medicine.

These sessions are also a chance for us to share our ideas and have a say in the development of the community garden and how we can make it a more inclusive space.

Expect a relaxed and friendly environment, with a variety of activities from cooking and gentle gardening to digging and DIY. Open to all ages. Children are always welcome but we ask that furry friends be left at home. No experience needed.

The day normally includes:

Gardening, horticulture and land management activities, for example: bed prep, seed sowing, pruning, planting out, scything, meadow raking, weeding, seed saving, harvesting, and much more!

DIY and landscaping: there is always something that needs fixing or building. On our list right now are shelves to be put up, benches to be made, gutters and water pipes to be installed and our outdoor seating area to be levelled.

Cooking: We cook a seasonal communal lunch (including a vegan main dish), inspired by ingredients in the garden. Meal-time is a communal affair; from harvesting and cooking to eating together! Lunches served up in the past include a Romanian spring soup with wild greens (ciorba de salata), a Greek bean soup (fasolada), Persian rice, seasonal salad bowls and more!

Free-time! There is no pressure to work too hard - there is always spaciousness for cups of tea, hanging out and exploring the garden!

Learning: We try to include a mini-workshop within the day - in the past this has included sessions on seed saving, taking cuttings and meadow management.

Herbalising: one of our intentions is to make herbal medicine more accessible. We sometimes harvest and make simple remedies during the day - expect to go home with bundles of herbs, remedies or seedlings for those who want to try growing herbs at home!

Care and inclusivity : We all look out for one another in the space by trying to embed a culture of care. You are welcome to come as your are and work gently if need be. Whilst knowing that children are the responsibility of their parents, we all try to help out with childcare, that may look like giving the kids a wheelbarrow or starting an activity for the little ones, or plating up food for a parent who hasn’t got a free hand. All are welcome in the space and we have zero tolerance for discrimination. So expect a welcoming vibe.
